Wind River WY For Your Next Vacation

By Deanne Shepard

There are many, many reasons to visit the Cowboy State (or the Equality State, since Wyoming was the first state to give women the vote). One of them (in a manner of speaking) is Wind River WY. This name covers a river, a mountain range, a huge basin, an Indian reservation, a massive lake - basically a whole bunch of central Wyoming.

Of course, going there for a vacation is a great reason. There is so much to do and see that you could make this your designation for years and never get tired of the spectacular scenery. The WR Mountains have 19 of the 20 tallest peaks in the state. The gorge below the Boysen Reservoir and dam gives the Grand Canyon a run for its money. The Continental Divide is an imaginary line that runs right along the tops of these peaks.

You can enter into the history of the west by panning for gold or walking through a silent ghost town. The Wild West with its color and excitement comes alive at local rodeos. National and state parks showcase the natural splendor of the region, while their visitor centers give background information and tourist guidance. Hikers might see petroglyphs on cliff walls.

There are more than 1,300 lakes in WR country for fishing, boating, swimming, and other water sports. The mountains and hills can be explored on a mountain bike, a horse, or an off-road vehicle. People come for hunting, skiing, quality golf, hiking, and rock climbing. Authentic reproduction Indian villages are always fun. All of these activities are within easy reach of your campsite, lodge, or hotel.

For those who like to gamble, the Northern Arapaho tribe hosts Wyoming's largest casino, with all the amenities needed to make staying over a great experience. They have a ninety-room hotel with two restaurants and an espresso bar. There are two gift shops with authentic Native American jewelry, pottery, rugs, and other goods for sale.

If not all of your group wants to gamble, the hotel offers bus tours of the area. Yellowstone National Park is within driving distance, as are the Grans Tetons. Jackson Hole Ski Resort is also close by the reservation.

Wind River itself is 185 miles long. Starting in the pristine WR Lake, it winds down to the Owl Mountains where it becomes the Bighorn River. Its course runs southeast through magnificent, barren stretches of mountains and valleys, with evergreen-ringed lakes and patches of forest. This is country that makes you realize just how big these United States are. Photographs taken here will help you be sure you weren't dreaming while you were in WR country.

This is a real destination for those who love the idea of getting away from it all, stepping back in time, seeing wilderness areas that haven't changed since the first human arrived, or reliving the early history of our nation.
