Helpful Moving Tips

By Pammy McGrath

For those who have are looking to purchase a home for sale in Fredericksburg or perhaps a home for sale in Texas Hill Country, you might be a bit overwhelmed with all the issues surrounding finding a home, obtaining a loan and working through escrow. The thought of moving chores might be more than you can handle thinking about, but the following tips can make moving much easier.

Your first step is to hire a moving company, unless you plan on completing the move yourself. If you don't wish to use professionals, you still probably need to reserve a truck for your moving day. If you go with a company, get several quotes and never choose a mover unless they actually come to your home and assess what needs to be moved and then provide you with a solid estimate of how much the move will cost.

Packing is a huge chore, but the sooner you begin, the easier your life will be. Begin by packing up everything that you don't really need for day-to-day living. This includes decorations, extra clothes, books, DVDs, memorabilia and any item that really isn't necessary for daily life.

As you pack, it is best that you stay as organized as possible. Don't mix items when packing, each box should be similar in contents or go to the same room in the new home. This makes unpacking much easier. You can label each box with a marker and select a different color marker for each room. For example, all the boxes that will go into the new kitchen might feature green lettering, while all the master bedroom boxes are written with a blue marker. Give a quick description of what is inside the box so you know which boxes probably should be opened first and which ones can wait a day or two.

It really helps to have a master list created that includes all of the many tasks that need to be completed by your moving date. There are so many things to do that it's hard to store them all in your brain, so make a list and you will be less likely to forget important tasks. Organize the list by category or perhaps by the date when items need to be accomplished.

Your list should include escrow tasks, packing tasks and other important jobs. For instance, you need to deal with turning utilities off at the old house and on at the new house. If you are moving out of the area, you might need to acquire school records, medical records and transfer prescriptions. You also need to put in a change of address order with the post office and begin permanently changing the address for anyone who sends you a bill. This includes magazine subscriptions, credit card companies, health insurance paperwork and anything else you can remember. The forwarding order from the post office will only last a few months, so call or go online to update your addresses.
