Martial art as the name suggests, is a set of combat methods. Different sets of skills are practiced in various regions of the world. Martial art does not have any specific criterion of classification. There are two major criteria of classification including region and intention of practice. Some categories allow participants to employ weapons while others have strict rules about use of weapons like sticks and swords. Those that disallow use of weapons only involve demonstration of skills, striking, and defending.

Unarmed combat requires one to focus. Participants are allowed to kick and punch. Sports such as karate, sanshou, vale tudo, and wushu are a result of modified unarmed combat. Some sports like wing chun and boxing allow only punching. Some allow exclusive kicking such as savate, kickboxing, and taekwondo. Grappling is diverse and includes judo, jujutsu, glima, and sambo. It involves throwing the opponent down, pinning techniques, choking, submission holds, and joint locks.

Personal strength and power also find a lot of application in unarmed combat art. Techniques taught entail channeling the strength of the challenger to work against them. Throwing the challenger off balance is an example of a maneuver that uses the strength of the enemy. Some skills capitalize on strength and speed. Trainees acquire skills on maintaining proper body posture and balancing body energy during a combat.

Combat art based on weapon entail practicing on how to use different weapons. The weapons vary from arrows, sticks, poles, pieces of cloth, to bladed weapons. People must be able to distinguish between exaggerations and what is real. Exaggerations like those seen in action movies are not for everyone. Youngsters tend to copy such moves only to end up in hospitals nursing fractures, wounds, serious injuries amongst others. They must be notified in advance of the results of trying out such moves at the start of movies.

Different levels of martial arts are currently taught by various schools and facilities worldwide. The schools are licensed and trainees are taught by qualified tutor. Safe training grounds are offered by such facilities and they also have first aid kits and tools for handling emergency situations. Rates are based on the level and type of art one needs to learn.
