Some Signs And Remedies For Swallowing Disorders

By Nora Jennings

The movement of food down the food pipe is a natural occurrence that happens whenever we are eating. It comes naturally just like other processes like inhaling and exhaling. However, it is not just a simple process as many of us think, as it could lead to huge problems if it does not take place well, it could go to the extreme of causing death. Hence we need to look out for any swallowing disorders.

One of the most common signs in many people is having coughing fits when one is eating. In some people, it makes it difficult for them to eat anything at all, and this is a huge problem. The risk is doubled when they are taking in liquids as the risk of aspiration is even higher. When one stops eating, they will normally not have the coughing fits anymore.

Having the psychological trauma of choking often leads to the individuals eating very slowly. They also tend to chew for a very long time hence spend a lot of time when eating. They may avoid eating altogether or avoid doing it when they are near anyone. Once they chew, they swallow very slowly, with the fear that they might chock, which is not necessarily the case.

Children are the most commonly affected by the problem. They refuse to swallow the food altogether, and it ends up remaining in the mouth for a very long time or dripping out through the corners of their mouths. Chest blockages after meals is related to the problem but not always. Seek medical attention whenever you notice some of these problems. However, some of the conditions are minor, and some people have managed to live with them.

People with these problems will usually lose weight at an alarming rate. This is common in children since they end up not talking in anything. Adults too may have these problems especially if there is pain during swallowing. This is common to people who have mouth and throat sores since they experience a lot of pain when taking in the food.

These problems are serious because they cause a high risk of aspiration. This is where food enters the air pipe and goes to the lungs. This is a potentially fatal problem but may cause pneumonia and chronic lung diseases. This is why one should take serious steps to take care of the problem whether it is psychological or physical.

There is a lot of pain that comes with food particles missing their way hence the need for some pain killers. Eating soft foods is the best way to ensure ease of swallowing. Eat less spicy foods that could cause irritation due to their high levels of acid.

One can feel isolated in social gatherings if they are unable to swallow food. This is why such a problem should be addressed seriously. There are different ways of doing this. This includes changing the texture of the foods by mashing and also performing specific exercises.
